Don’t Complain, It’s Your Practice… You Created It.
Several years ago I was writing a letter to my members to invite “you all” to one of my boot camps. I was writing this letter in one of my thousands of offices located all over the country…
Starbucks!
And Starbucks can be a very interesting place. There are many business and life lessons to be learned – if you just open your eyes (and mind) and look around.
And this day did NOT disappoint
As I was peacefully sitting there, a woman with a couple kids came in. I noticed her right away because her kids were out of control… running around screaming.
And guess what? Murphy’s Law was in full effect… because… after getting their drinks – they sat down right next to me. There were open seats all over the place – and they sat right next to me. Shrug followed by deep, heavy s-i-g-h.

Didn’t Work So Well
Anyway, they put their drinks on the table and sat down. It wasn’t long before one of her little kids leaned on the table, the table tilted abnormally, and her coffee spilled everywhere.
It was obvious from the way the table tilted, that one of the legs was short. Or, another was long – depends how you look at it. You know the whole glass empty – glass full thing…
The woman freaked out. Screamed at her kids. Made a spectacle.
Strabuck’s employees swarmed like killer bees who hive had just been kicked and quickly took care of the mess. The table was clean and problem solved in no time. They even gave her a free coffee to replace the one she spilled.
So what did this woman do next? Did she move to another table with even legs?
Nope.
She stayed at the same table. Put her new, free coffee on the table. Spread out her reading material. Her maniac kids, once they were finished running around badgering everyone in the place, came back and leaned on the table… again.
And guess what happened?
I really don’t have to tell you do I? You already know what happened don’t you?
Yep… the second, free cup of coffee spilled everywhere!!!
The woman acted shocked and freaked out again. Yelled at the kids again. Starbuck’s staff had to clean up her mess…
AGAIN!!!
Then she picked up her soggy stuff, rounded up the little demons, and left in a huff.
So why have I told you this interesting (and frustrating) little story?
I’ve told you this story because the moral is one of the most important factors to your success – or failure – depending which road you decide to take.
And the moral is this: STOP PUTTING YOUR COFFEE ON A TABLE WITH BROKEN LEGS AND CHILDREN PLAYING ON IT!!!!
In other words – stop doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Or, at least, don’t act shocked and complain and yell at others when things suck.
No matter how many times that woman put her coffee on that broken table and had her out-of-control kids lean on it… the results are ALWAYS GOING TO BE THE SAME. The coffee is going to spill and she’s going to act surprised while someone else clean up her mess.
This is the story of MOST people’s lives. And this is the story of MOST Chiropractor’s practices.
The same holds true in your practice and your life.
Whatever results you have in your practice and life are direct results of whatever you have done or have not done. Wherever you are in life – you put yourself there. You created your practice and you brought all your patients, friends, relationships, spouse(s) etc. into your life.
That woman in the Starbuck’s example likes to act “shocked.” She likes to yell at her kids. But I’ve got news for her…
She Has No Right To Be Shocked Or Yell At Anyone Because She Created The Entire Mess And That Mess Was 100% Predictable!
When I was sitting there watching her put another cup of coffee on that broken table – I knew it was just a matter of time before it spilled again.
So why didn’t she?
Who knows and who cares. We can’t fix her.
But the really important thing is: If you do not have the practice and life you want – ARE YOU PUTTING THE SAME COFFEE CUP ON THE SAME BROKEN TABLE AND ACTING SHOCKED AND FRUSTRATED WHEN EVERYTHING SPILLS?
